COE Committee Rejects
L.A. Hills Resolution for New District

SAN JOSE, CA – A resolution to develop a new K-8 school district in Los Altos Hills was turned down Thursday evening by the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization.

The resolution, which was submitted by the Los Altos Hills City Council, asked the County Committee to develop a plan for creation of a K-8 school district within the town.

After about two-and-a-half hours of testimony and deliberation, the nine members of the committee who were present voted unanimously to reject the request.

Committee Chairwoman Josephine Lucey explained she was basing her vote on three factors: that students in Los Altos Hills were not suffering from lack of educational opportunities at the schools they currently attend; that the number of students who would attend a newly formed district would not be enough to meet state criteria; and that community members were divided over the need for a new district.

Before the vote, 32 people spoke to the committee on the issue. They were on a list of people who originally had signed up to speak at a Dec. 7 meeting on the issue. That meeting was continued because of the number of speakers, and also because committee members had questions that they wanted staff to research and answer.
