News and Events Title

February 16, 2007 APR and API Release

TO: Santa Clara County School District Superintendents
FROM: Colleen B. Wilcox, Ph.D., Superintendent
SUBJECT: February 16, 2007 APR and API Release

On February 16, 2007 the California Department of Education released corrected September 2006 Academic Progress Reporting (APR) and Academic Performance Index (API) data. This report compares the original Santa Clara County student data with the corrected data. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets include: Participation Rate, Annual Measurable Objectives in English Language Arts and Math, and Graduation Rate.

Schools and districts that do not meet all the criteria are identified as needing Program Improvement (PI). If a school or LEA receives Title I funds and does not meet specific criteria for two consecutive years, NCLB requires sanctions.

Santa Clara County AYP Results

As a result of the data correction, one percent more high schools met the AYP graduation requirement. The remaining AYP indicators are unchanged.

API

The 2006 API Growth report reflects growth schools and districts made in the 2005-06 school year and if growth targets were met. The API is a numeric score between 200 and 1000, reflecting a school's performance on tests in the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. The API is a secondary indicator for AYP under NCLB. This report contains API corrected growth scores for schools and LEAs. API results are reported twice a year: a base API in March and corresponding growth API in the fall.

There was no change to Santa Clara County’s API score of 784 as a result of the data corrections. There was a slight increase in API for Whites and English Learners.
