History Day is an educational program devoted to improving the teaching and
learning of history in Santa Clara County. History Day is a meaningful way for
students to study historical issues, ideas, people and events by engaging in
historical research. History Day programs have been recognized for excellence
among history educators and communities.
Santa Clara County History Day invites students to research topics related to
this year’s theme The Individual In History: Actions and Legacies. This
Broad theme will allow students to select and research an endless number of topics,
from local to world history. Many of these topics easily align with the
California Standards fro History/ Social Science.
HOW IT WORKS
Each year a primary (4th& 5th grade poster only), junior (6th-8th grade) and senior (9th-12th grade)
competition is held based on a national chosen theme. In following with the theme students can choose a
category in which to enter; traditional historical papers, dramatic presentations, artistic exhibits,
multimedia documentaries or historical websites. Students work individually or in groups and research
different ideas, places, people and events in the world or the United States. They do this by visiting
museums, conducting interviews, reading historical journals and exploring historical archives. Winners
at the county level proceed to the state and national contests.
